A laptop refresh leaves a company with dozens or hundreds of working business laptops. Sold together and prepared properly, they return real money; left in boxes for a year, they lose most of it. A fleet two to four years old is usually the sweet spot: old enough that you have replaced it, new enough that someone else will happily use it.
The most common reason a working business laptop sells for parts instead of as a laptop is a lock the company forgot to remove. Before you sell, check these:
Clearing these yourself usually takes an hour in the admin portals and can double what a lot is worth.
Every laptop holds company email, files and saved passwords. Reformatting does not remove them. Decide per batch: keep the SSDs (laptops are sold without drives, worth a little less), destroy them, or have them wiped with data-erasure software so the laptops can be resold complete. Ask for an itemised list with serial numbers either way. Our IT asset disposal guide explains the options in more detail.
Desktops and monitors from the same refresh can go in the same lot. For the full process, see our guide to selling old IT equipment.
