Server decommissioning in Dubai: how to retire servers and storage without losing data or value

When a company moves to new hardware, colocation or the cloud, the old servers and storage still have to be shut down, wiped or destroyed, removed and disposed of. Done in the right order it protects your data and recovers money, because servers, server RAM and enterprise SSDs are in high demand. This guide walks through decommissioning step by step.

Step 1

Confirm nothing still depends on the server

Most decommissioning mistakes happen before anyone touches a cable. Before a server is switched off for good:

Step 2

Record what is in each server

List each server and storage unit with make, model and serial number, and what is inside it: processors, RAM modules, drives, RAID and network cards. This list is your record of what left, and it is also what a buyer prices from. Server RAM and SSDs are often worth as much as the chassis, so it pays to note them.

Servers

Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco, Supermicro
  • Model and generation — e.g. PowerEdge R740, ProLiant DL380 Gen10
  • CPUs — model and count

Memory and drives

Often the most valuable part
  • RAM — number and size of modules, DDR4 or DDR5
  • Drives — SAS, SATA or NVMe, sizes

Storage and network

In the same racks
  • Storage arrays — SAN and NAS with their shelves
  • Switches — top-of-rack and SAN switches, optics
Step 3

Deal with the drives first

Servers hold your most sensitive data. Decide before removal whether drives are kept by you, destroyed, or wiped with data-erasure software so they can be reused. Storage arrays need the same decision for every disk in every shelf. Record the outcome against each serial number.

Step 4

Removal from the rack and the data centre

Plan the physical removal with your data centre or building management: access dates, gate passes, loading bay times and who escorts the team. Rails, cable management arms and power supplies should stay with each server, because complete units are worth more. If the whole room is being cleared, include racks, UPS units and cabling in the plan.

Step 5

Resell what has value, recycle the rest

Recent servers, DDR4 and DDR5 server memory, enterprise SSDs and supported network equipment have strong resale demand at the moment. Older or faulty units still have value for parts, and what cannot be reused should be recycled, not stored or thrown away. See our pages on selling used servers and selling used server RAM, or the networking scrap guide for the switches.

Common questions

Questions about server decommissioning

Do you buy servers that have been decommissioned?

Yes. Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Lenovo ThinkSystem, Cisco UCS and Supermicro servers, with or without drives, from single units to full racks.

Can we keep or destroy the drives and still sell the servers?

Yes. Servers sell without drives; we price them accordingly.

Do you buy the RAM and SSDs separately?

Yes. Server memory and enterprise SSDs pulled from servers are among the items we buy most.

Can you collect from a data centre?

Yes, anywhere in Dubai and the UAE. Send the access rules and preferred dates with your list.

How do we start?

Send the server list, or photos of the service tags, on WhatsApp +971 56 696 1736 or email sales@proto-link.ae.
